Hardy’s Crown Brewery, (?) Cheadle Hulme, Manchester
I want to find a link to Hardy’s past Owners/licensees?
My great grandfather, Walter Wilde operated a Hardy’s Brewery in Manchester in about 1880 -90s.

Thanks for your query
The only entry related to Hardy or Wilde in Manchester in our flagship book - ‘A Century of British Brewers - Plus’, which covers the 10,000 or so breweries that we are aware of having been in operation in the period 1890 - 2004, is hardy’s Crown Brewery of 87 Renshaw St.
This was registered in May 1889, was acquired by United Breweries in 1962 and was demolished in 1965.
Unfortunately this does not mention Mr Wilde but perhaps a BHS member in the area knows more?

Hello,
In 1992 I had an enquiry from Roger Simpson regarding Fred Wilde, a Manager of Hardy’s Crown Brewery. Is this related?
Regards,
Alan Gall.

I have sent an e mail reply….thank you Alan.

As I child, post WWII, I remember being taken to the area where the brewery was located. Renshaw Street, seems to be in my mind. Somewhere I have an old photo of my gt grandfather, in a narrow alley way, outside the ‘delivery door’ when a beautiful horse/cart was arriving with barrels.

Jackie - you photo sounds of great interest. If you manage to find it I wonder if the Society could have a scanned copy of it please?
Thanks Jeff
