This directory covers the areas of the old counties of Northumberland and Durham including the city of Newcastle. The entries are in place-name order and follow the usual BHS pattern of first-known reference, ownership, brewers-proprietors, and in most cases the final demise of the company. The entries range from a single line where nothing more is known about the brewery to a few pages for a well-documented brewer (e.g. Vaux). Source references accompany each entry, and an index is included.

This county gazetteer lists in alphabetical place order all the breweries known to have existed in Oxfordshire (excluding the “non-commercial” breweries of farms or country houses). This volume includes many well-known breweries such as Brakspear, Garne, Hall, Hook Norton, Hunt Edmunds, Morrell and many other lesser-known breweries. Note that breweries in the large towns of Abingdon and Wallingford, which were once in Oxfordshire but are now in Berkshire, are excluded - they will be included in a future BHS volume on Berkshire breweries.

The area covered by the gazetteer is that of the present county of Somerset, and thus excludes the area which is now part of Bath and North-East Somerset. The entries give a brief history of the brewery and if known, more details such as the brewery builders and engineers, the beers brewed, pubs owned, area served and an indication of the brewery size. Reference sources are given for each entry. A good supply of black & white photos illustrates the text.
