Radcliffe & Co., Cross Brewery,Kidderminster

Radcliffe BreweryA query on behalf of Andy Walton (AWalton@golleyslater.co.uk)

I’m looking to research the above Brewery that was sold to Butlers, Wolverhampton in 1947.

Could you possibly indicate potential sources of reference to further my search, which is proving very difficult!

Any help in this matter would be be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Andy Walton

    Dear Mr Walton,

The standard work on brewery archives, ‘The brewing Industry. A guide to historical records’ by Lesley Richmond and Alison Turton published in 1990 makes no reference to Radcliffe & Co and it is therefore unlikely that the records of the company survive. There is also no listing of the records of W. Butler itself in Turton & Richardson so your task is indeed difficult.

The BHS publication ‘Century of British Breweries plus’ has the following listing (p52):
Radcliffe & Co. Ltd, Cross Street, 96 Worcester Cross. Registered 1931. Acquired by W. Butler & Co. Ltd of Wolverhampton with 40 houses in 1946′

Successive editions of ‘The Manual of British and Foreign Brewery Companies’ have a listing for Radcliffe & Co. which confirms the above information and also gives the names of the directors over the years and the share capital, which was £30,000 in 1931, rising to £40,000 by 1934 and remaining at that when acquired by W Butler.

Sorry not to be of more help. I doubt if the above tells you anything you do not already know. Good luck with your investigations.

    Dear Andy,

A virtually full set is available for inspection at the National Brewing Libary in Oxford - full access details on their websire.
